Scot vs. Scot

Gracepoint!!! I missed you last week.

I wanted to do a post about some of my thoughts on FOX’s Gracepoint and ABC’s Selfie. Both shows featuring some Who alumni on American TVs.

Its no secret how very much I adore David Tennant nor is it a secret how little I can usually stand Karen Gillan. At the beginning of the fall tv season, I was looking forward to watching both of them in their American tv series. I was looking forward to Gracepoint because I had heard great things about Broadchurch and wanted to watch that series. Then, I heard they were making an American adaption and so I decided to wait. David Tennant can do no wrong in my eyes so I knew I would be interested. I was looking forward to Selfie mostly because I was looking forward to the subsequent cancellation. But something kind of strange happened…

First, my thoughts on Gracepoint. It. Is. Fantastic. Really amazing. I wanted to watch Broadchurch before but now, I feel I absolutely have to. I was so happy to read that there will be a second season of Broadchurch which I am hoping means we will get another season of Gracepoint as well. The characters and the phenomenal actors really make this an amazing series; more on that in a sec.

Selfie: I simply couldn’t wait for this series to fail. Episode one, I tuned in ready to talk same major shit about how horrible Karen Gillan was yet again. No matter how great John Cho is, there would be no helping this girl. Not even 5 minutes into the premiere episode and… I loved it.

There was no subtly in establishing that this was a modern take on the classic Pygmalion. (Eliza Dooley? Henry Higgs? Come on.) The plot lines were as shallow as the main character but I honestly enjoyed this show; I watched every episode. I’m actually disappointed that I called it right and the show was cancelled by ABC. From what I understand, they will be airing the rest of the episodes on Hulu but it was still cancelled…

The acting on Gracepoint is some of the best I have seen in a long time. My heart breaks every single episode for multiple characters. Just a pained look in someones eye will have me in hysterics. I try to compose myself but then another heartbreaking moment occurs and I just begin sobbing to myself all over again. Every minute of every episode is completely enthralling. Because I was planning on watching Broadchurch, I didn’t want to do any reading-up on the show’s characters or storylines, but it seems to follow a very similar story.

I really can’t believe I’m about to put this thought into writing but it’s actually Tennant who, sometimes, briefly, seems to be the weak link here. (You must understand how hard it was for me to type that) There are times when I feel like he’s letting the American accent slip and I hear that Scottish roll on out.

Karen Gillan on the other hand: fantastic American accent and never letting it slip! (What is even happening in the world?!) John Cho was ok but the rest of the cast was practically useless. No great range and even in the above picture, I don’t know who the hell the guy to the far left is and the chick pictured in the top right is a neighbor Eliza runs into occasionally… It was really all about Eliza and Henry and they were already (clearly) falling in love in the few episodes that aired so where could the writers even take these characters? The answer is obviously, nowhere, and I’m sure that contributed to the network’s decision to X the show.

So, 10 vs. Amy. Tennant vs. Gillan. Scot on Scot competition: Selfie/Gillan didn’t crash and burn the way I expected. Well, I guess they did but I made sure to indulge myself with this guilty pleasure weekly while I could. As predicted, the show was shit but it was the kind of shit I guess I wanted to watch. Gracepoint/Tennant, not surprisingly, are clearly the winner in this fight. I can’t wait for Gracepoint to come back with a new episode, Thursday, after a week off for Thanksgiving. When this season ends, I definitely plan on watching all of Broadchurch. I’m curious to find out just how closely Gracepoint followed the original story. (Even their promo shots look the same…)

If there’s one good thing that came from Selfie, I don’t absolutely hate Karen Gillan as an actor anymore. In fact, I enjoyed her performance. Better luck next time, Amy!
