D.I.Y. :: Galaxy Nails

Last night, I decided to try out a nail art idea that I’ve seen floating around the internet for a long time: Galaxy Nails. It’s super easy to do and there’s really no way to possibly mess-up. All you’ll need to do this yourself is a few nail polishes and a makeup sponge or a couple of cheap eye shadow applicators.  The color polishes you’ll want to work with include: 1. Black or Dark Purple or Dark Blue. 2.) White 3.) Light Green or Light Gold. 4.) Blue or a Brighter Blue (if you used dark blue for your base color) 4.) Pink. 5.) Sparkles. Here are the colors I used:

  • wet n wild :: black creme
  • sally hansen extreme wear :: white on
  • julep :: piper
  • sally hansen triple shine :: wavy blue
  • julep :: lily
  • julep :: trina
  • sinful colors nail art :: bad chick
  • sinful colors :: queen of beauty

IMG_6870.JPGStart by painting your nail with your dark color. Next, dab white polish around the center of the nail with the sponge using a very light hand. Then, apply your next color the same way.

Blend the last color into the dark polish perimeters with blue. Now, add touches of pink or purple around, still using the sponge technique. *Be sure not to over-do-it with any of the colors and end up covering all of the white; you still want some white popping out.* The next step is optional: Using a teeny-tiny nail art brush, you can add some white specks and x’s (or maybe bigger chunks of glitter). Finally, finish with a sparkly top coat and you’re done!

Next time I paint my nails like this, I will definitely do a few things differently. One of those adjustments will be to go easy on the sparkle polish too. I feel like the overabundance of of silver takes away from the colors. But what can I say? I like a lot of glitter in my galaxy.

Cheap-o Nails

By now, you all know I’m a bonafide nail polish junkie. No matter where I go, I seem to walk out with at least one new nail polish. As much as I like long-lasting, quality brands and shades, I can’t help but constantly buy cheap polishes. (Cheap nail polishes are the best!)

While picking up a few necessary items from CVS, I spotted the cheapest nail polishes in the store, Confetti. All of a sudden I found myself planted directly in front of the display, crouching down, perusing the colors.

007

The first one that I spotted that I particularly liked was #087, Moonstruck. I added it to my shopping basket. Then, like a moth to a flame, my inner gay man guided my hand directly to the most glittery top coat #004, Tazmanian Devil.

006

Glitter, sparkle and lots of fun is the current holiday season trend in nails. (Its also a “trend” I participate in year round.) I decided to rock my new cheapies together in a fun, glitzy mani.

(Obviously,) I started with Moonstruck. A beautiful, muted purple.

004

Then, I applied Tazmanian Devil to the tips. I didn’t worry about this being even at all. I pretty much just slapped that glitter on and embraced the haphazard, fancy free fun.

005

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I love cheap nail polish.

Thanks for reading! I’d love to hear what some of your favorite, cheap-o, drug store brand polishes are! I’d also love seeing your fun, holiday, glittery nails!!!

Blue, Black & White Nails

Yesterday, I treated myself to some new beauty supplies. (I got bored and spent too much time in Walgreens..)

  • Sally Hansen Complete Care Extra Moisturizing 4-in-1 Treatment
  • Sally Hansen Smooth and Perfect ColorCare – 07 Sea
  • Sally Hansen nail file
  • Vanity Fair Magazine
  • YesTo Cucumbers facial towelettes
  • wet n wild megalast nail color – 213C On a Trip
  • wet n wild megalast nail color – 218A I Need a Refresh-Mint
  • wet n wild megalast nail color – 204B Private Viewing

At the hotel where I work, nail polish is extremely limited. You may as well not wear it because that how light it needs to be: nude neutrals, light light light pink, classic french and clear. That’s pretty much it. So when I have a couple of days off, I like to feed my love of fun nails. This time I exploded and went all over the place within a blue, black and white theme.

The supplies used: Sally Hansen complete care, wet n wild blue, white sinful colors nail art, rimmel finish pro in black, pure ice black crackle, pure ice white sparkles, some random nail stickers and manicure stickers.

Here’s what I came up with:

***excuse the sloppiness in the above photo. that was taken immediately following painting, before I even washed my hands or cleaned up the edges.***

It’s a shame because tonight, I have to take it all off and replace it with a neutral color to work. 😦 At least I bought myself a brand new neutral on Sunday too! … Always thinking ahead.

imPress Press-On Manicure

You all know how much I love doing just about everything and anything to my nails. I’ve always loved being pampered and getting professional manicures but then I feel locked into however they’re painted for about a month in order to get my money’s worth (I’m a starving artist, I can’t go getting my nails done once a week… come on now.) I love being able to change my nails and have been receiving compliments on my bold choices and precision skills since middle school. Back in the day, I was quite the wielder of a nail art pens and stickers!

I’m also quite fond of press-ons. I know, I know, but these babies have come a long way since those sticker-applied Lee’s! I came across imPress Press-On Maicures at my corner Walgreens on Monday when I spotted the Zebra print press-ons. Upon further investigation I found the Leopard prints, then the awesome black with silver ones… I had to buy these. Even if they would only last one day, I had to.

I had just started my work week and we’re banned from anything other than nude/neutral nails (not even pink! … unless it’s super light), so I grabbed a pack of traditional french so I could put them to the test immediately.

Leopard and Zebra Print

Black & Silver and Classic French

I read the package’s directions and glue is not necessary. There is adhesive on each nail; you remove the plastic cover and simply press on the nail. It also shows a promise of lasting up to a week*! I doubted all of this. But I knew I had nail glue at home anyway and could always use it.

I applied these nails on Monday night. It is now Saturday night and the nails are still intact and still looking cute. I’m shocked! Shocked and so happy that they really do work. I can’t wait to rock the other sets I bought! Since I definitely can’t sport those tacky plastics at work, I’m not sure when I’ll have a chance to for more than two days. 😦

I’m so please with how long lasting these have turned out to be. The glue-on sets usually start lifting by now and looking crappy, not these. The only gripe I have with these imPress Press-On Manicures is how short they are. I always have my nails just above the tips of my fingers and would normally file them way down anyway, but these nails a just a tad too short. I have very long nail beds, so this probably isn’t a problem for most which is why I would highly recommend these nails. Even if you wear them for one night, they’re super easy to apply, they don’t come popping off out of nowhere and they’ve got some pretty adorable colors and designs to choose from.

I’m not so sure why it matters that ex-pussycat doll, Nicole Scherzinger endorses these… It’s nice to see she’s still alive and all, but who the hell cares what she’s wearing?

2005 was a good year…

Whoa… and not the good kind.

I just love how simply-detailed all these are. So beautiful. I thought I’d pass these pics along for the enjoyment of all of you! Hope you like! and I hope you’re inspired to get a little creative with your own makeup!
