Skin Care

Fresh-Faced for February

I’ve been kicking a cold the last couple of days. A cold that would’ve been much worse had I not gone crazy with the Airborne and Emergen-C. Off of work and with no plans other than loafing around the house watching The Super Bowl with my family, I took advantage of the downtime to give myself a little pampering.

After a day of no makeup, I followed up some plucking and waxing with a mini facial. I finally put to use some fantastic products I had received from my monthly beauty subscriptions after cleansing with my Clinique Facial Soap.

I used my Renu Exfoliating Gel by Sesha Skin Therapy. Applied to dry skin a circular motions, this gel “removes dead skin cells and unclogs pores with papaya enzymes.” It promises to cleanse, tone and exfoliate and I believe it kept that promise. As I worked the gel all around my face, I was collecting little clumps of dead skin to be rinsed away. After rinsing, my skin felt so smooth and appeared brighter, more “alive”. My skin is super sensitive and this gel didn’t aggregate my face at all. So gentle and so effective. I am really loving this face polish. I have some similar products to put to the test too but I just may end up buying the full size bottle!

Next, I applied Hydro Cool Firming Eye Gels from Skyn Iceland. After some late nights followed by early mornings and a boatload of stress, my under eyes definitely looked a little sad; kind of dark and just tired. Once I removed these pads after only 10 minutes, my eyes looked much brighter and refreshed! Not only is this an effective product, it’s 100% vegetarian, cruelty-free, as well as free of any parabens, petroleum, mineral oil, sulfates, phthalates, synthetic fragrance and dyes! Another amazing face product!

Although still feeling a bit crummy from this cold, my skin and face looks and feels a whole lot healthier!

Daily Face Care :: Clinique

IMG_1759

My mother is a longtime worshiper in the church of Clinique. Although she’s not one for more makeup than some liner and mascara, she’s always preached the word of healthy skin care. Currently using Clinique’s Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion+, I grew up watching and learning from my Mom’s use of Clinique’s previous moisturizers and face washes so I should come as no surprise that I continue to depend on Clinique’s products to keep my face a healthy and clean one.

AM :: At the start of my day and beauty routine, I use the Clinique mild Liquid Facial Soap. My face doesn’t get too dirty throughout the night and I don’t want to begin the day drying it out and this soap is the best for light cleansing. I follow up my wash by using the Clarifying Lotion 2, it’s the perfect gentle exfoliant and finish up with the moisturizing cream de jour. (I’m currently playing the field of daily moisturizers and deciding where I’ll lay my loyalty for a while. It is, after all, a very important decision.)

PM :: When it’s time to strip off the grime for the day, I remove my makeup with towelettes and then deep clean with Clinique’s Rinse-Off Foaming Cleanser. Skipping the pre-wash makeup removing isn’t n issue with this cleanser either; It’s pretty powerful and can easily remove makeup or other coating like sunscreen. Just like in the morning, my wash is followed by a cotton ball of the Clarifying Lotion 2. Before bed I apply a very light weight nighttime moisturizer (again, currently unattached to one.)

While I’m singing their praises, I’d like to mention another fantastic Clinique cleanser. Their Rinse-Off Eye Makeup Solvent works like a charm. It’s gentle and effective!

If you’re in need of a good daily face routine and new to the concept, first of all: shame on you for waiting so long to begin a healthy skin care regime and secondly: congratulations on embarking into a brighter world face first!

If you are a face care newbie, a great place to start is with one of Clinique’s 3 Step Skin Care Systems. You can easily determine your skin type by visiting your local Clinique counter or by visiting their site and taking their skin diagnostic test. Whether you have Very Dry, Cry Combination, Combination Oily or Oily skin, there’s a 3 Step System for you. Each contains your ideal Liquid Facial Soap, your best suited Clarifying Lotion and the Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion+ or Gel. It’s an easy way to get in the habit of practicing good skin care habits and they’re some of the best products you can find!

Hope this post helped some of you make the decision to give Clinique’s face care a try or even just inspire you to take good care of your face no matter what products you select.

PS: To keep the skin on the rest of my body clean, fresh and healthy, I like to use Neutrogena’s Pink Grapefruit Body Clear Body Wash daily and an Apricot Scrub a few times a week. (The one pictured below is by equate, Wal-Mart’s brand, but it’s just as good as St. Ive’s and about $1 cheaper.)

September 2012 :: Birchbox #5

Here it is. My review of the Septmeber Birchbox. Finally.

I received my September Birchbox on Sept 28… Yeah. BUT: Better late than never! Here goes.

Color Club – Birchbox Custom Polish in “Status Update” :: Full Size – $8 – I actually really like this color. I usually choose dark colors over lights and I love that this polish is dark enough without being too dark. Theres hints of blue, grey and green in Status Update and I had to slap on a coat immediately after receiving my box. ♥♥♥♥

Nevermind the crappy paint job and band-aid, this color is awesome.

Nexxus – Pro-Mend Split End Treatment System :: Full Size – $9.99-$14.99 – This is the one sample, this month, that I have not tried as of publishing this post. Regardless, these samples are nowhere near “premium”. I could find a similar sample in a magazine or at a retail sales counter. For that reason and that reason alone, having never tried this product, I’m giving this sample 0/5 ♥s. Zero. I’m not happy with this sample strictly based on size. Even though it boasts that this treatment system will bind 92% of split ends together in one use, I don’t feel this sample provides enough to even make a true judgement of quality and effectiveness. I will eventually give this system a try, of course and I may decided to buy full size bottles to really give them a try, but as far as September’s total Birchbox score is concerned, this sample will not contribute any points.

twistband – Birchbox Custom Lace Hair Tie :: Set of 6-12 – $14-$22 – ANOTHER F*CKING TWISTBAND! First of all, I’ve already received one of these in my first ever Birchbox (May 2012); I was not impressed then and I’m not impressed now. Second, it’s neon-f*cking-orange. I’m a ginger. I filled out a beauty profile. They know I’m ginger. Another 0/5 ♥s.

Vasanti – Brighten Up! Enzymatic Face Rejuvenator :: Full Size – $34 – This exfoliating cleanser is amazing. Almost too amazing because after my first use, I experienced a [very rare] breakout. The microderm crystals and papaya enzymes worked harder than my usual products to remove the dirt and oil that was left behind. ♥♥♥♥♥

Youngblood – Mineral Primer :: Full Size – $41 – This primer makes my skin feel the way Soft Lips makes my lips feel (if you’ve ever used Soft Lips, you know exactly what I’m talking about.) Containing vitamins and minerals to sooth skin, this primer does it’s job of preventing makeup melt-away. ♥♥♥♥

September Birchbox Score :: 13♥s/20

In spite of issuing a zero score to 2 of my 5 samples, the products I loved, I really loved and September’s box earned 13 out of 20 total possible ♥s.

Extras

Mighty Leaf Tea Company :: Box of 15 – $9.95 – Chamomile Citrus (Herbal Infusion), Vanilla Bean (Black Tea), Green Tea Tropical. I love tea. Always have. Growing up, my mother was a tea drinker; we didn’t even have a coffee maker for the longest time. Tea was the choice in our house. Although I do love a good cup of coffee after dinner or as a mid-day treat, nothing beats a hot cup of tea. Of the three teabags I received, I curled up with my cup of Chamomile Citrus as I began reading my new book (J.K. Rowling’s The Casual Vacancy) and it was delightful. I can’t wait to try the Vanilla Bean black tea next and although I am not a big fan of green teas, I’m still excited to give the tropical blend a try as well.

Tristan Prettyman :: 2 song download – I haven’t downloaded these songs yet nor have I ever listened to Tristan Prettyman but I love music and always love giving new artists a try.

This month, the Birchbox team included their first ever Birchbox Lookbook. It was full of this fall/winter’s most popular trends and style ideas executed by staff members. It’s definitely no Vogue (or even Glamour), but it was cute and I look forward to receiving future “issues”.

I also got a $25 Gift Card to apply to any purchase of at least $75 from Madewell.com. Unfortunately, it had to be used between September 10-30. Just rub salt in my late-box wound why don’t you Birchbox. Birchbox Fail.

The products in this box that I like, I love. I will most likely purchase the full size bottles of the Vasanti cleanser and the Youngblood mineral primer. No lie. Love them both! Over-all, September’s Birchbox was pretty damn good.

I’m eagerly awaiting my October Birchbox which I hope will be one of the limited Goop Birchboxes!! -eek! I hope all the featured products are fabulous and I hope it comes on time! I’m also looking forward to receiving my very first Glossybox in October!

GK Favs :: YesTo Cucumber Facial Wipes

I’ve recently discovered and become a fan of the YesTo line of organic beauty prodcuts. In a recent post (YesTo :: April 9, 2012), I discussed my satisfaction with both the  YesTo Cucumbers Calming Facial Mask  and the  YesTo Carrots Daily Cream Facial Cleanser. So, on Sunday, when I picked up a few new supplies, I decided to also try YesTo Cucumbers Soothing Hypoallergentic Facial Wipes.

I. Love.

These are absolutely PERFECT for my sensitive skin! I bought the 10pk to try them out but will definitely be using these much more. AND they’re only $2.99! (Online and at my local Walgreen’s).

As previously posted (Fav Skin Products :: April 3, 2012), I usually use Neutrogena’s Fresh Foaming Cleanser at night, before bed but sometimes I’m a little too exhausted from a long day (or otherwise working with less than 100% accurate control of my motor functions and/or common sense) to wash my face before crashing out. It is during these times (dawn) when I have previous relied upon Neutrogena’s Cleansing Facial Wipes for removing the makeup thats already began running its own course down my face. However, I do believe these YesTo Cucumber wipes have just officialy replaced the Neutrogena wipes for me…

Yep… I LOVE these things!

The Neutrogena wipes remove the makeup and are still gentle on my skin, however, they always leave my face feeling… heavy?… I don’t want to say “greasy”, because that’s not it but they did have their own sort of residue left behind. These YesTo Cucumber wipes remove all the grime and my skin feels cool and refreshed.

Every YesTo product I’ve tried so far has left me completely satisfied. I will most definitely be trying more YesTo products and will continue to let you know how much I love them.

Thanks for reading.

Yes to

Recently, I stumbled upon some pretty pretty awesome new products. I picked up two products from the Yes To line.

Yes to Carrots Daily Cream Facial Cleanser – no complaints. I’ll have to use this a bit longer to really form an accurate opinion of it.

I also bought the Yes to Cucumbers Calming Facial Mask – I loved how my face felt after using this!

The package explains a lot of the benefits of each of these products, which is what really gave me the confidence to try them out. I did some research on their other products on their website and read about their organic ingredients and practices. There’s several Yes To lines of products, each targeting specific skin types and their common problems with a natural solution.

So far, I’ve experienced good results with the Yes to Carrots Daily Cream Cleanser and the Yes to Cucumbers Calming Facial Mask. I’d love to try some of the other Yes to products. My final conclusion (so far)? I would definitely buy the Cucumber Facial Mask again and I would definitely consider buying the Yes to Carrots Cleanser. I would also suggest that others give some of these organic products a try.
