Mad for Makeup

Stila, Sephora and Urban Decay, oh my!

I did a little splurging today. (What else is new?) It started out innocently enough on Birchbox.com and quickly escalated into a full-on makeup buying frenzy. Nevertheless, I wanted to brag about the goodies I’ll be receiving soon enough and let you in on some of the awesome deals that you can also claim right now.

Since I’ll be canceling my Birchbox soon, I wanted to cash in the Birchbox points I had. The two items I traded my points for are below and I’m quite excited about receiving them.

First up, is the stila “It’s Go Time” Lip Glaze trio. It’s a “Birchbox Exclusive” except that you can get a similar trio on Sephora as well. ( Sephora.com: stila lip gloss trio also $12. Or for a little more than double, why not get 8 stila glosses? stila “All is Bright” lip glaze set for $25)

My only gripe with stila glosses are how sticky they are. The shine and pretty pout they offer is what keeps me coming back but the stickiness is less than pleasing.

Next, on Birchbox.com, I picked up one of the nail colours from Zoya’s Intimate Nail Polish Collection. I chose “Caitlin”. It’s the lighter purple color featured below under “available options”. (2nd polish from the left in pic).

I’ve never used Zoya nail polishes but I’ve read some good reviews and I really loved the colour of Caitlin.

So that’s that. I traded in my Birchbox points. No sense in missing out on redeeming them for some products before canceling my subscription, right? But my cosmetics shopping didn’t stop there. No, I moved on to Sephora.com where I spent more than I planned to today. I did nab some sweet deals though!

I love the sample boxes put together by Sephora! It’s a great way to expand your makeup arsenal without paying for the full sizes at full price. This set is the Sephora Favorites Glitz and Glam Party Sampler and is perfect for the upcoming holidays ($45)! The set includes:

  • – 0.09 oz Stila Duo Shimmer Powder in Kitten
  • – 0.018 oz Laura Mercier Baked Eye Color – Wet/Dry in Black Karat
  • – 0.02 oz bareMinerals Eyecolor in Good Fortune
  • – 0.125 oz SEPHORA by OPI Nail Colour in Looks Like Rain Dear
  • – 0.11 oz Josie Maran GOGO Instant Natural Volume Argan Mascara in Black
  • – 1 oz Nars Body Glow
  • – 0.17 oz Lorac 3D Liquid Lustre Gold
  • – 0.15 oz Bare Escentuals Marvelous Moxie Lipgloss in Trail Blazer
  • – 0.01 oz Stila Smudge Stick Waterproof Eye Liner in Starfish
  • -Metallic zipper clutch

I almost bought the Stila Smudge Stick on Birchbox for $20 before venturing over to Sephora and I’m sure glad I didn’t!

Here’s what Sephora has to say about the Glitz and Glam Party Sampler:

What it is:
A dazzling makeup collection featuring nine of Sephora’s most glittering products—plus a chic metallic clutch.
What it does:
Perfect for the holidays, this kit has a gorgeous assortment of festive products to create any party-ready look, including three full-size products. Take it all anywhere you go in the included distressed metallic zippered clutch.

I can’t wait and I wont have to for very long because on Sephora, any order over $50 includes free three day shipping! However, my Glitz and Glam box is only $45, I had to find at least one more item to make my order more than $50. I found two.

Urban Decay Eyeshadow in Haight. $6. YES! $6. They are having a sale on Urban Decay Eyeshadows right now. I would suggest you hop over to Sephora right now and buy them all at this price! I took everything in my power to not buy all 13 colours. If this sale is still going on next week, I will be back for the rest! Today, I only picked up two. The other colour I bought is:

Purple Haze. Just like the Jimi song. Normally, I’m a neutral colour kind of girl but since I was splurging anyway, I figured I’d get some fun colours! (I want to get Half Baked and Kiddie Pool as well.)

That’s where my buck stops but those aren’t the only things coming at me from Sephora. I was able to select 3 samples from a [pretty slim] list. Here’s what I selected:

I’ve never tried either of these perfumes and I’m excited about giving this leave-in conditioner a try as well. That’s still not it. By using the promo code philo3 at check out, I secured a 3 piece Philosophy sample set as well.

If you head over to Sephora.com, make sure you sign up to be a Beauty Insider. It’s Sephora’s customer reward program that allows you to accrue points as you buy that can be redeemed for sweet stuff. It also keeps you in the loop about specials, promotions, new product launches and earns you invites to special events. Sephora also send their Beauty Insiders a birthday gift each year! It’s a great program and if you’re spending anyway, why not collect points to be used later?

I may have spent more money on makeup than I expected to when I woke up this morning but the deals I got are incredible. Money well spent, I say! I know I’ve been slacking on my Daily Threads posts; this weekend I was just having way too much fun and didn’t have time to take any pics and post the descriptions and yesterday I had to do some Halloween shopping after work followed by a movie with friends. (We saw Argo. I loved it. One of my friends hated it. I would suggest seeing it.)

No word back from Birchbox yet. If you read, they contacted me on Friday about my dissatisfaction with the October Goop Birchbox. I was temporarily impressed with their customer service so instead of sending them the nasty email I had drawn up to send them originally, I decided to be a bit nicer and tone down the anger. However, since I haven’t heard back from them, I’m now figuring that their whole “reach-out” to me was BS and they really just don’t care about their loyal subscribers or the quality of their service. If you’re pissed at Birchbox too, contact them and tell them Ginger-Kate sent you! If i ever hear back from them, I’ll be sure to let you know how they plan to resolve this extreme upset over their craptastic box.

Thanks for reading! I’ll be posting full reviews on each of these products once I’ve received them and had a chance to play with them.

Love, GK

2012 MTV VMAs

Ugh. What a terrible way to start off a year of award show coverage. The fashion on display at tonight’s VMAs was absolutely atrocious and the performances were just as bad. There’s no way to ease into this (that’s what she said) so here we go. Red carpet fashion first then, “highlights” from the show.

THE WORST DRESSED

P!nk, Zoe Saldana, Demi Lovato

Pink, Zoe Saldana and Demi Lovato were the least offensive of the offensive dressers. Bad but not absolutely horrible. Pink, This looks hot and not good-hot; sweaty, smelly hot. Zoe’s dress actually doesn’t look all that bad in this photo, in fact, it looks pretty good. However, during the show, when she was introducing a performance the dress looked like an absolute mess. Demi. IDK what to say. This doesn’t completely suck… but it sucks all the same.

Jessica Szohr, Nicki Minaj, Regina Spektor, Maria Menounos

Jessica – What is this? I do know it’s horrid. Did you cut those slits yourself? Nicki – I know you’re all about being a “character” but this looks like a rejected Spider-man costume. Regina – You look like an awkward 8th grader at the school dance. Maria – No. Just, no.

2012 USA Olympics Gymnastics team and Swimmer Missy Franklin

Who let our Olympians dress themselves? Everyone looks horrible… and manish… I don’t care, I said it.

Jersey Shore cast members

Some of the cast of The Jersey Shore… ’nuff said. Ok, Pauly D looks good (from the forehead down)… Ronnie, Sammie and Deena all look like they are attending the same 8th grade dance as Regina Spektor. Poor Vinnie looks like he’s dressing as Michael Jackson for Halloween.

THE ABSOLUTE WORST DRESSED

Miley Cyrus

The absolute WORST dressed of the night was Pink… I’m sorry, Morticia Adams… nope, sorry again, Miley Cyrus. The best looking thing about Miley is Liam Hemsworth and he’s not in these pictures.

Ok.. enough of the bad (and unfortunately there was far too much of it tonight) Onto the Good!

THE BEST DRESSED

Katy Perry, Ke$ha, Taylor Swift

Katy Perry – normally, I doubt this wouldve made my Best list but tonight, it was one of the few that didn’t reek of tastelessness. Ke$ha – Yes! Kesha is included in my Best list. She looks good… for her. Taylor Swift – I like the white suit. It looks good. Unfortunately it’s tainted with her desperation to be a Kennedy.

Yeah, thats it for the Best Dressed. 3 people. However I do have a tie for The Absolute Best Dressed:

THE ABSOLUTE BEST DRESSED

Rhianna

Rhianna looked absolutely fab. Love this crisp, white greek goddess look.

Emma Watson

EMMA WATSON!!! My favorite for the night (and most nights). I can’t wait to see Miss Watson in Perks of Being a Wallflower. I think this dress is young and fun and totally appropriate for the night.

Now, before we move onto the show, I need to address something:

Alicia Keys, Swizz Beatz, Wiz Khalifa, Amber Rose

If you’re still carrying the baby, as in pregnant like Amber Rose and Wiz Khalifa, its ok to “bring” your baby to an award show, especially if you look as good as these two did. HOWEVER, if you are carrying that kid in your arms, GET A BABY SITTER. Damn. And come on… both Alicia and Swizz looked stupid on the red carpet. Especially Alicia in this horrible, horrible gown; she looks like she’s marrying the Tin Man.

One with the show…

Kevin Hart hosted this year’s VMAs. Now, Kevin Hart is hysterical! So I naturally figured he’d be a fantastic host for the night’s events. I was wrong. He spent too much time trying to make “real” points like how Kristen Stewart shouldn’t be judged for making a mistake and how Chris Brown and Drake would stop fighting. You know, the realest of real issues. It was a waste of time.

Rhianna opened the show with a performance of Cockiness. The only thing I thought was great about her performance was how into the audience she got, right in the crowd. Until I realized, throughout the show, how EVERYONE was getting in the middle of the audience… it became weird and a little uncomfortable.

One Direction’s Thats What Makes You Beautiful won for Best Pop Video. They picked up a few moonmen tonight including Best New Artist.

Pink’s performance wasn’t amazing but compared to the others it was probably the best of the night… which is really strange. Not as strange as the fact that Pink has people buying her music for over 12 years now. I did like the dancing lip ladies and Pink’s lips swing.

Chris Brown won Best Male Video for Turn Up The Music. He accepted with his ridiculous and not a bit sexy or excusable white and blue-bangs hair.

Frank Ocean’s performance was HORRIBLE! Everyone was talking about how he “stole the show”. The only thing he stole was time from everyone who witnessed his performance of Thinkin’ ‘Bout You.

Hey! Who has two thumbs and can’t stand Rashida Jones OR Andy Sanberg?!

Ugh… the worst. They are both so painful to watch. They were presenting the award for Best Hip Hop Video.

Drake and Lil Wayne won and for some reason Nicki Minaj and two other gentlemen had to join them in accepting their statue. It is at this moment when I began to rewind the cut to Rhianna over and over and over because i’m pretty freaking sure she mouths “I fucking hate that asshole”. If you have it on your DVR or OnDemand or if you change the channel to MTV it’s probably on, check it out and let me know what you think.

I also think she and Katy Perry were talking shit the entire show about everyone and loving every minute of it.

Ya know, they really just don’t make boy bands like they used to. Moping about on stage… where’s the sick moves guys? You aint got shit on Justin! What?! They are total little cuties though. If I were 13 I’d be lovin’ that!

Nicki Minaj’s Starships won for Best Female Video. Every time I hear her speak, I find her more and more annoying, sad and off-putting. I love many of her songs; can’t stand her. And why the hell does she require a two man escort to the stage?

Lil Wayne and 2 Chainz performed. It was lame. And Weezy needs to never not wear sunglasses; his eyes are creepy as fuck. A very messy performance. A skateboard? (The side-by-side pic of Lil Wayne and Donnie from The Wild Thornberries, that’s starting to circulate, is spot on.)

I’m pretty sure Emma Watson was wasted when she introduced Green Day with her Perks of Being a Wallflower costar, Ezra Miller. She looked a little stumble-y.

Not enough rock stars OD anymore. Now they stick around way too long and make progressively shittier and shittier music. This was the perfect place in the show to take a bathroom break without pausing my DVR since we’ve all heard this song before; for the last 17 years.

Alicia Keys performed Girl on Fire and was shockingly bad. She was awful. What happened to that 18 year old musical wonder-girl who gave us all a reason to believe in neo-soul?

Rhianna won the biggest award of the night, Video of the Year for We Found Love. … I do like that song and video…

… and then THAT happened. Was it really necessary to include the spoken break-down in the middle? It’s awkwardly placed and completely unnecessary on the track but in a live setting now? Ridic. I love the outfit though. Ascetically it was ok but, ugh, this girl…

That was it. Thanks for reading!

I’d love to hear what you thought of this monstrosity. Please subscribe if you like what you read and want to be notified every time I post something bc bookmarking just doesn’t cut it and you just can’t miss a word!

and then if you’re in super stalk mode, you can follow me on Twitter, (where I mostly shamelessly promote my crap.) Tumblr (where I mostly nerd-out) and Instagram (@GingerKate)

Thanks again for reading! Love, GK

String Thing

I’ve always been a big headband fan but recently I’ve been loving how much fun can be had by adding the right band. One of the biggest trends in hair, right now, is using stringy little headbands in very simple styles. I’ve chosen three vintage inspirations that I love and show how adding the right headband can turn your hair into a classic, easy to do, throwback look.

Hippie Bands

You can transform your simple ponytail or down-do into a whisper of the free-spirit style of the late 1960s by adding a stringy band around your head, over your hair.

You can choose bands with or add feathers, flowers and other adornments to help better capture the earthly nature of this look.

Vanessa Hudgens, Mary Kate Olsen, Michelle Williams, and Nicole Richie are just a few celebs who love wearing a bohemian band.

Flapper Style

Just like the ladies of the days of prohibition and suffrage, you can easily achieve a flapper-like look by adding a jazzy headband to your outfit.

Headbands with a simple shape but a bit more sparkle and pizazz are a great way to turn simple hair into an elegant style reminiscent of the 1920s.

Nicole Richie (again), Elizabeth Olsen, and Selma Hayek all know how to glamourize like a bootleggers gal.

Greek Chic

Let your inner Goddess shine by opting for a messy chic greek style. Even an unwashed-hair, stick-it-up-in-a-bun day can quickly become a chance to strut some spartan style.

A messy up-do, long flowing curls and everything in between can be given a little dose of historical fashion for an adorably easy to achieve summer style that’ll have others worshiping at your temple of style.

Blake Lively, Kim Kardashian, Taylor Swift and Selma Hayek (again) are great examples of achieving the perfect greek goddess hair.

I hope this post has inspired you to play around with headbands and/or some vintage inspired looks.

2012 Grammy Awards

Last night, the 54th Annual Grammy Awards were held at the Staples Center in Los Angelos. The Grammys are one of my favorite awards shows because I am obsessed with, live, breathe music. Now, the Grammys really only cater to a fraction of my musical tastes because only a fraction of the music I enjoy is commericla enough to be recognized by the mainstream media outlets (Which is more than perfectly fine with me. I HATE when something I love so much (especially a band) is polluted and ruined by bandwagon fans. Now, thats not to say that I hate when bands “sell out” and find success in the mainstream. I’m a girl who wants her cake and to eat it too I guess… Enough of this tangent.) But at least the Grammys can usually deliver a few great, memorable performances and of course, my favorite, the perfect outlet for fabulous fashion! Shall we then?

MY FAVORITE LOOK OF THE NIGHT:

Rihanna at the 2012 Grammy Awards

Rihanna, for me, looked the best on the red carpet. I love everything about this from the plunging neckline to the Louboutins. Her amazing, wild hair and makeup complete everything that is fabulous about this look.

BEST DRESSED

Kate Beckinsale, Kelly Rowland and Queen Adele all looking fab at the 2012 Grammys

One of my biggest Girl Crushes is Kate Beckinsale and at the Grammys, she looked amazing! I also loved Kelly Rowland; her gown is gorg and her hair is fierce. And Queen Adele is the winner of the world looking amazing and classic.

Jajjie J, Corinne Bailey Rae and Kelly Osbourne

Jessie J looked like my Mirror-Ballgown Dream come true! I love this! Corinne Bailey Rae, one of my favorite female musicians, looked totally gorgeous and completely awesome all at the same time. Kelly Osbourne looked so elegant! (and I love her)

John Legend, Most of Kings of Leon, Common

Guys were looking swagertastic last night as well.

Ok, she’s bat-sh*t crazy, but I have to give credit to Lady Gaga.

Lady Gaga at the 2012 Grammy Awards

She may be to good to walk the red carpet, but I love that she looks like a citizen of The Capitol (THE HUNGER GAMES!!!!!!!). Who else but Gaga can pull off a full body veil and a golden staff? Not Nicki Minaj, thats for damn sure. And come on, she’s hanging with Sir Paul McCatney…

***Can we please take a moment to recognize how brave it was of Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton to sit next to her… those poor, pimple love-fools.***

WORST DRESSED

Katy Perry and Taylor Swift

Katy Perry, I am so disappointed. WTF is this anyway? First of all, your dress doesn’t have to match your hair. Second, this looks like a bridesmaid gown from 1978. Taylor Swift annoys the crap out of me anyway, this gown makes her look like some 80s Hong Kong call girl.

Alicia Keys, Carrie Underwood, Fergie

I’m not even sure why I hate this look on Alicia Keys, but I do. She wearing the same Christina Louboutin heels as Rihanna (go back and look.), but with Rihanna’s long gown, the little toes sticking out awkwardly doesn’t stand out so much. I’m also not digging the gold amour protecting her neck and chest. Carrie Underwood looks winder than a double-wide trailer. (Now even her fans can understand why I hate this gown.) Everyone kept talking about how “daring” Fergie was for wearing this. First of all, it’s screaming for attention. Second, if she was so damn daring she wouldn’t have selected rib-high granny panties to wear underneath (yeah, we know you’re looking for that all day tummy control Fergie). And Finally, this color combo only reminds me of Halloween, which is my favorite holiday and somehow appropriate for how scarey this is. Ugh.

ABSOLUTE WORST DRESSED

Nicki Minaj's most recent desperate cry for attention

You. Are. Not. Gaga, Bitch. This is not a “statement”. This is, yet another, desperate cry for attention. We may have been shocked by Madonna’s ‘Like a Prayer” when it came out but this is not shocking. This is not thought-provoking. This is stupid.

Every award show and it’s given red carpet has a few attendees that just make me question: “Why the f*ck are you here?” From now on, I will have a special part of each red carpet post specifically for this: WTFAYH?! The Grammys presented me with at least three of these attendees:

WTFAYH? Why The F*ck Are You Here, Rebecca Black, Paris Hilton and Snooki?

ON WITH THE SHOW!

Performances

Jennifer Hudson, Bruno Mars, The Beach Boys with Foster the People and Maroon5

Of course, at every oppertunity, somebody mentioned Whitney Houston.. ok.. then we had to watch Jennifer Hudson do her best impression of her. Bruno Mars gave, what I thought, was an incredible performance! The Beach Boys performed with Foster the People and Maroon5, performing with Maroon5 being their first mistake. They’re clearly… aged. And where the hell was John Stamos?!

Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj,Taylor Swift.

Ok, Katy Perry’s performance in a very unflattering costume was pretty horrid. I hate to say it because I love Katy but the dopplerganger opening with “E.T.” and then this new, very angry song about moving on… go over-eat ice cream and talk about your ex with girlfriends… And Nicki Minaj. Um….. Waste. Of.Time. Every moment of Nicki’s performance, complete with a completely stupid and completely unnecessary video of “Roman”, all I could think was that that time could have (and should have) been given to Paul McCartney… I’m just sayin’. Taylor Swift… what is this elaborate, hillbilly set? I don’t get you… and you’re f*cking lame. Oh, I’m sorry, am I being ‘mean’? Maybe it’s because everything you do is horrible… and Beyonce had one of the best babies of the year…

Rihanna performs with Coldplay and cuddles with Katy Perry in the audience.

Rihanna’s performance with Coldplay made me totally go “wtf?” when it started… then I started asking “Where the hell is Coldplay?” Chris Martin finally showed up and the performance was… eh… But Rihanna and Katy Perry cuddling in the audience was way adorable and more entertaining to watch than her performance.

Adele's performance at the 2012 Grammys

Queen Adele was breath-taking, mind-blowing, tear-jerking and over-all incredible, as usual. I can’t say how much I love this woman. She is so freaking amazing and I can listen to her albums from start to finish and enjoy them every time… especially when I want to cry for a bit or belt my lungs out (alone. by myself. so nobody gets hurt.)

Paul McCartney performed twice at the 54th annoual Grammy Awards

Oh Paul. SIR Paul McCartney. I can not express how much I love this man either. I share this love with so mnay and thats one of the things I find most beautiful about him. Paul first performed a song from his new cd “Kisses on the Bottom” but then took the stage again with Bruce Springdstien, The Foo Fighters and others who had b=performed earlier in the night. He performed, the impecible, Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight/The End… I died.

***Look how awesome Dave Grohl looks! (Love that man too!)***

WINNERS

Adele is the 54th Annual Grammy Awards' big winner

And the winners are: Adele. Adele. and Adele. … She swept the damn show. I was so happy every time they called her name and every time she accepted it was adorable and gracious and so classy.

Adele cleaning up at the 2012 Grammys

and some other people won too… INCLUDING, the hilarious, Louis C.K.! Yepp…

Grammy Winner, Louis C.K.

AMA Red Carpet & Beauty Bargains

Tonight were the American Music Awards… and I can’t resist a Red Carpet… *insert Ginger joke here*… So here are a some of what I thought were the best and worst looks.

Lets just get to it and start with some of The Worst ensembles.

Avril Lavigne (why are you here?),
Nicki Minaj (Ok, we get it. You can be the Rap Gaga),
and Ke$ha (Not that Ke$ha ever dresses well).

… and her makeup was ridiculous… I love that she goes for it though.
In fact, I really really hate to admit it. and I fought it,
but I love Ke$ha… maybe not quite love yet.
-She still dresses horrible-

Oh, what an adorable dress on Miley…
Hang on, did she get a roll of toilet paper stuck in the back of her panties?
No, it’s just an ugly, unnecessary, obnoxious train… on her mini dress.

Some of The Good looks that I liked:

Jenny McCarthy lookin’ fab.
Rhianna, R&B Favorite Female Artist Winner, looked great.
Kelly Osbourne in Dior. Her hair looks kind of stiff though.

I personally, don’t particularly care for Miss Swift,
but her look was fantastic. I love how Mod and Sparkely it all is!
She also won Country Favorite Female Artist.

But my personal pick for Best Dressed is Katy Perry!!!

Her dress is Badgley Mischka and her heels are Brian Atwood.
Her look is all amazing.

The makeup was beautiful too!
I love how cute and feminine Katy looked.
I do ♥ Katy.
(I didn’t want to for so long… but I do.)

Oh, and let me not forget to mention the anticipated NKOTBSB performance.
The New Kids on the Block and The Backstreet Boys teamed up. So. Feel free to watch. It was a medley/remix of multiple songs from both groups. Notes were missed. Breathing was heavy. and whats even more sad, is that NKOTB totally showed up BSB. And they’re way older. I wont get into that pathetic excuse for a dance breakdown… all I’ll say is *NSYNC would have hit that sh*t!

I stopped by Walgreens tonight and ran into a few Beauty Bargains! I was super excited!

  • I picked up a Neutogena Mineral Sheer Concealer Kit.- #05 Fair- I this stuff; it covers so well. It’s light and smooth. The “kit” has two steps. The First is the cream concealer and the Second in the translucent setting powder. -$7.19 SALE
  • Rimmel London Stay Matte Clarifying Matte Foundation – #102 Warm Ivory- This foundation has a small amount of salicylic acid and other botanical extracts to help clear skin. It’s a little thick, but the Matte finish is perfect for shows. Usually my stage makeup causes me to breakout after being under the lights, so I hope this will help. -$3.99 SALE
  • Rimmel London Eye Shadow Trio in #407 Dark Angel, soon to be discontinued. I’m a eye shadow addict so I couldn’t resist. -$2.79 SALE
  • I also picked up a bottle of Sinful Colours nail polish. It’s black with blue sparkles called “What’s Your Name”. This brand is always $1.99 at Walgreens. (I ALWAYS use Sally Hansen’s Hard As Nails nail growth base coat and Sally Hansen’s Super Shine Top Coat so I don’t mind spending $2 on a cheap polish… I like having a large variety at home at my disposal.)

Here’s how the polish looks. You can’t really see the blue sparkles. 😦

I also picked up the December issue of InStyle.
I can’t wait to really read through it.
