August 2014 :: Ipsy Gam Bag :: Beauty Schooled

photo 3

This month will be my last Ipsy Glam Bag. I’ve decided to cancel after over a year of monthly bags. Truth is, I haven’t been “wowed” by my bags over the last several months and I think it’s simply because my makeup knowledge has vastly expanded and I’m no longer in need of being introduced to products monthly. I know what I like and I know what to look for. I enjoyed my experience with Ipsy but it’s just time to move on. It’s not you, Ipsy, it’s me. Anyway, here’s what my bag contained this month:

  • Absolute – Lip Balm in Green Apple
  • Glam Glow – Youthmud Tinglexfoliate Treatment
  • Urban Decay – Perversion Mascara
  • Lord and Berry – Silk Kajal Kohl eye pencil
  • Manna Kadar Cosmetics – Sheer Glow

I’ve had a lot of fun sharing my monthly glam bags with you guys!

April 2014 :: Ipsy Glam Bag :: Beauty Rocks

I received my April Glam Bag from Ipsy, yesterday; I had very mixed feelings about this one. Ipsy is the one beauty subscription services I’ve held on to since I went on my subscription box binge beginning in Summer 2012. I got bored with Glossybox, Julep Maven and downright fed-up with Birchbox but Ipsy, I stayed with for well over a year now. I still look forward to my monthly bag of goodies but some months are not as awe-inspiring as others. Some can be pretty disappointing, actually. April was one of those months for me and for several reasons: Some of the products are good products, perfectly fine, but they’re just not awesome. Some arrived damaged this month and caused some extreme disappointment. I really like the design on the bag this month. I’d love it more if it didn’t actually say “Ipsy” on the record but, hey, that’s branding. I also love that all the products I received this month are made in the USA; that’s pretty neat. (I’m not actually 100% sure where the Cailyn lip balm was made, it doesn’t say on the bottle.)

photo 2

  • Cailyn – Tinted Lip Balm in Apple Pink I like the color I received; It’s the kind of color I would totally pick out for myself. I would’ve liked to have been sent Acid Pink, though. That’s not a color I would normally choose and one of the main reasons I started with cosmetics subscriptions was to be challenged and try products and colors I normally wouldn’t. When paying $19 for a lip balm, you’re going to select the one you feel most comfortable with, one you know you’ll use. For $10 and a surprise with no guarantees, I want to be shocked more, scared even. What made this product a real disappointment for me wasn’t the color, however. This product came half full. One side of the container is pretty full to the top and it just slopes down, barely covering the bottom on the other side. (That’s a bit confusing to explain: It looks like the product melted while being stored on it’s side. Still, the container wasn’t filled with product so there was ample room to move to one side.)
  • Urban Decay – 24/7 Velvet Glide-on Eye Pencil in Black Urban Decay 24/7 pencils are my absolute favorite liners ever. I am never disappointed to received these and always have them in my makeup case. Never a disappointed. I could complain that this product is nothing new and nothing out of my comfort zone as I did above with the Cailyn color but I don’t want to. I love these pencils and will never complain about getting them. I have them in many shades and colors and use them almost daily.

photo 3

  • Demeter – Roll on Perfume Oil in Jasmine Not “wowed” by this product at all, it does smell nice… It smells like Jasmine. I find it a bit odd that Demeter encourages the use of multiple scents. I suppose it makes some sense: Why smell like Jasmine when you can smell like Jasmine and [blank]? I don’t know. I’m more of a one scent kind of gal. Not disappointed with this product but not excited about it either.
  • Dr. Brandt – Microdermabrasion scrub – Like every scrub or lotion I receive from Ipsy, I’ll use it but I’m not thrilled about receiving it. It smells terrific! It feels really nice too. I also really like any Dr. Brandt product I’ve received but still not “wowed”.
  • Elizabeth Mott – Pop! Goes the Shadow in Champagne First of all, I’m getting bored with the Elizabeth Mott products; they’re not that great. Second, my eye shadow arrived completely broken up. It’s more of a dust shadow now. Such a huge disappointment. The color is nice and I hope to get to use it properly sometime but it’s a mess. I can’t even open it without losing product every time when it comes spilling out of it’s cheap container. Party foul, Ipsy.

By redeeming Ipsy points I’ve accrued, I also got a 6th product this month:

  • TokyoMilk Dark by Margot Elena – Slated Caramel Lip Elixir – This stuff is pretty amazing so far. It smells fantastic! It feels pretty fab too and even tastes great. My mom gave it a try and loved it also. I’m so happy with this product and love that Ipsy offers that points reward system to earn extra products but I shouldn’t have to rely on the extras to make my monthly experience worthwhile. This may have been the month I threw in the towel had I not received this lip elixir.

photo 4

One more gripe, since I’m griping: The selection of products that Ipsters can redeem their Ipsy points for needs to change more frequently. As of present, I have no other options allowed to me until they add a new item to choose from since I’ve gotten them all. And thats not because I do not want doubles, I would order another TokyoMilk Elixir in a second if I could. I have plenty of Ipsy points to spend and want to get my hands on more products! (Don’t we all?) The options seem to stay up on the site for months, perhaps until they sell out?

Had it not been for the Urban Decay liner and the TokyoMilk Lip Elixir, I would’ve been a very unhappy Ipster this month. I’m pretty unhappy as is but I would’ve been uber disappointed otherwise.

In other news: I posted last month about my car accident. My collarbone is almost 100% and last week I purchased a new-new car. I’m now rolling in a new VW Passat and feeling very grown-up! Thanks for the kind messages and emails while I was healing, it means a lot. After a bit of a rough patch, it seems things are coming back together nicely and I’ll have the pleasure of posting more frequently. Thanks again for reading and all the support!

Birthday Makeup Haul :: Urban Decay & Sephora

Happy Birthday to ME! Almost. But since it’s so close to my birthday, I decided to treat myself to a bit of a beauty shopping spree so I hit up Sephora.com and UrbanDecay.com for some new goodies! And since I’ve been up all night marathon watching Season 1 and 2 of HBO’s Girls, I figured I’d take the time to brag about my most recent purchases.

IMG_1712

Having been a fan of the Urban Decay Naked palette for a long time now, I knew i needed to purchase a new one. I had never purchased the Naked 2 palette before since the colors are pretty close to the colors in the original palette. Things time, however, I went for it and bought the Naked 2 palette as well. I also picked up the brand new Naked 3 palette full of rosy must-have colors, a couple of lip glosses from Nars, new brushes and some sweet extras.

IMG_1728

From Urban Decay, I ordered the original Naked palette and the Naked 3 palette. I received two samples of eyeshadow primer with each palette and a Naked lipgloss sample with my entire order.

IMG_1716

Over on Sephora, I ordered the Naked 2 palette, 2 Nars lip glosses in Bad Education and Coup De Coeur, and a travel eyeshadow brush set. Additionally, I received a sample sized Lip Junkie lipgloss with the Naked 2 palette, Tarte clean slate pore less primer by entering a promo code, and the three samples I selected to receive with my entire order are: Murad Age Reform Intensive Wrinkle Reducer, Murad Pore & Line Minimizing Hydrator and Peter Thomas Roth Laser-Free Resurfacer.

I’ve got a few posts scheduled showcasing these products including a review/comparison of all three Urban Decay Naked palettes, brush set review and Nars lipgloss review. I hope you’ll be back to check those out.

August 2013 :: Ipsy :: Glamour Academy

August 2013 Ipsy Glam Bag :: Glamour Academy

030

Ipsy’s back-to-school theme fell short of an A. Not my favorite Glam Bag but not the worst. Here goes:

  • Pixi Beauty Lash Booster Mascara

Who can’t use another mascara, right? But I can do without this one. It leaves black raccoon eyes after a short time of wearing and as much as I will always put a free mascara to use, I’m getting sick of receiving them every month.

  • MicaBeauty Shimmer Powder, Bronze

Having been a fan of MicaBeauty for several years now, I have plenty of these color powders and shimmers. It’s good quality product though and for that, I can’t complain.

  • Michael Todd Pumpkin Nutrient Rich Facial Mask

I like this mask! And I found out the company is headquartered in my “little” town. I’ll be contacting them about possibly receiving some hometown love and will of course share my findings with you all.

  • Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer

I have too much Smashbox primer. I really didn’t need another. Their photo finish primer isn’t new; I want to be exposed to new products!

  • – BONUS: Urban Decay Revolution Lipstick in 69

Love this lipstick! I hadn’t tried any of Urban Decays Revolution Lipsticks yet but can’t wait to pick up a few full sized tubes in the near future!

Overall? August’s bag wasn’t too shabby but I could sure use a really stellar bag in the future, Ipsy.

Sweet Summer Sweat

On a recent trip to Ulta, my goal was to pick up some products I could sweat in. Call me vain, call me insecure, call me whatever, I HATE not being able to wear makeup when working out. I don’t need the whole sha-bang, but I hate going completely barefaced for sweat sessions. Yes, I know how absolutely ridiculous this sounds but the reason why I was in search of sweat resistant makeup is really the same reason why I dropped a few hundred on a new workout wardrobe.

I’m new to working out. I’ve always been a bit chubbier than I should be and recently the weight has seemed to just fall off on it’s own. I’m really quite the super duper late bloomer and kind of grew into myself now that I’ve reached my mid-twenties. Over the last couple of years, I been receiving more and more attention for my appearance. I don’t hate this, but it some how worked itself backwards and now I worry about when I don’t look as good as a could. I place more time into my appearance now that I am prouder of it. Back in the day, I wouldve been happy to be overlooked; now, I’m happy to stand out. So why can’t I go to the gym makeup-less? I’m getting there.

Being new to working out, I don’t know what I’m doing. I don’t know “all the moves”. It’s really no surprise that like anyone else treading unfamiliar waters, I’m uneasy and thus, self conscious. I may not be in control of whether or not I know what I’m doing yet but I can control whether or not I look good. I went on a Marshall’s/TJMaxx work-out apparel shopping spree and picked myself up a new wardrobe to sweat in (and I look pretty adorable in the workout gear btw). The only problem left to solve would be my makeup dilemma.

I have a very low-set brow. I look like I’m scowling about 90% of the time. My eyes, tucked below this shelf of a brow, are quite small. Tiny. My daily makeup allows me to open up my eyes; looking brighter and friendlier. But I can’t be rocking a smokey eye and liquid lined look at the gym! That’s just ridiculous. Even if its all waterproof, simply having the full-faced makeup look is silly. What can I get away with at the gym? A-ha! Here it is, my gym makeup:

I go with a light brown, very neutral shade of a waterproof eye pencil. I picked up this dual sided duo of pencils by Urban Decay. No mascara. Just a soft liner.

187

On my face, I don’t require a lot of coverage but to even out my tone, I use this BB tinted treatment by Tarte (one of my favorite brands) or an even lighter coverage tinted moisturizer. Both are oil-free and SPF 30. Both are very sheer. The BB can be built upon so it’s perfect for your gym bag as you can apply a couple of coats after your workout if youve got other places to be and errands to run.

178

While at Ulta purchasing my gym supplies, they were having a sale on Loreal products, so I picked up these two 24hr infallible eye shadows:  #997 Eternal Sunshine and #335 Golden Emerald.

181

I also picked up the Lorac TANtalizer Glow to Go Value Set. Check back tomorrow to find out more about that!!

I know many of you who read this will think its very shallow and silly of me to not feel secure enough to spend time around others without any makeup on. I recognize this too about myself. It makes me feel better and if I feel better about it (working out that is), I will continue to do it and I owe it to myself to follow a workout schedule. I owe it to myself to feel better about my appearance and take more pride in it. If slapping on a little eye pencil and tinted moisturizer makes me feel comfortable enough to go for it, I don’t see what so wrong with that.

Thank you so much for reading! I owe you guys a “What have I been up to for the last 6 months” post. A LOT has happened. Some really amazing things and some really shitty things. The last half of a year have flown by and dragged on in exuberant elation and nagging pain. My circle of friends, job and state of being have all changed and for the better. I find myself in a beautiful and content place in my life and I haven’t lost hope for a brighter tomorrow. One day soon, this limbo I’ve been balancing in for nearly two years will settle and I will settle safely where I am destined to.

Thanks, as always, for reading!
